John 8:32 – Truth Sets Free

“You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32).

The Hebrew word for ‘know’ is or yada and means ‘clearly understand,’ ‘confess,’ ‘perceive and see,’ and ‘distinguish.’ It can also mean ‘learning to know good from evil.’

The Hebrew word for ‘truth’ is or emet and means ‘firmness and faithfulness,’ ‘reliableness as spoken.’

The Hebrew word for ‘free’ is תשחרר or tischaror and means ‘to be released (from sin) or to become a ‘free man.’

A companion verse to that defines ‘truth’ is John 17:17:

“Set them apart for holiness by means of the truth — your word is truth.”

“You will confess, understand and learn to distinguish good from evil through the reliable spoken word, and the faithfulness of the spoken word will release you from sin and make you a free man.”


The Greek word for ‘know’ is gnōsesthe and means ‘to come to know, recognize, perceive.

The Greek word for ‘truth’ is aléthés and means ‘unconcealed,’ ‘worthy of credit,’ ‘authentic,’ and as ‘fact reality because it can be tested.’

The Greek word for ‘free’ is eleutheros and means ‘not a slave,’ ‘not under restraint,’ or ‘not under obligation.’

“You will come to recognize the unconcealed, authentic word and the fact that its reality can be tested will make you no longer a slave [to sin] .”
