Praise, Ringing Cry – Hebrew: Ranan


The Hebrew word ranan means ‘ringing cry,’ ‘sing aloud,’ or ‘shout for joy.’ This word is used when one is so overcome with joy that they shout aloud for joy. There are 54 occurrences in Scripture.

When Yeshua rode into Jerusalem, the people cried ‘Hoshanna’ and wanted him to restore the Kingdom to Israel. However, some of the leaders wanted the disciples to reprimand the people for shouting. Yeshua responded: “I tell you that if they keep quiet, the stones will shout!” (Luke 19:39-40).

“Those who had been about to die would bless me, and I made widows ranan in their hearts for joy” (Job 29:13).

“When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy [ranan]?” (Job 38:7).

“But let all who take refuge in you rejoice, let them forever shout for joy [ranan]!” (Psalm 5:11).

“This is why those living at the ends of the earth stand in awe of your signs. The places where the sun rises and sets you cause to sing for joy [ranan]” (Psalm 65:8).

“Come, let’s sing to Adonai! Let’s shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation!” (Psalm 95:1).
