Praise, Lifting Hands – Hebrew: Yadah

The Hebrew word yadah means to ‘cast’ or ‘throw.’ It comes from the root yad which means ‘hand.’ In worship it means to extend the hands in praise; or lifting holy hands in reverence to Adonai. By lifting the hands, it is an expression complete surrender to Adonai. Yadah is also used for making confession by holding out the hand. The name ‘Judah’ or Y’hudah in Hebrew comes from yadah and means ‘praise.’ The word yadah is found 114 times in Scripture; 70 times in the Psalms.

“She conceived yet again, had a son and said, “This time I will praise Adonai”; therefore she named him Y’hudah [praise]. Then she stopped having children” (Genesis 29:35).

“I yadah Adonai for his righteousness and sing praise to the name of Adonai ‘Elyon” (Psalm 7:17).

“Then I will generously sacrifice to you; I will yadah your name, Adonai, because it is good …” (Psalm 54:6).

“Give yadah to Adonai! Call on his name! Make his deeds known among the peoples” (Psalm 105:1).
