Here are the four sides of my N95 mask box. I had to wear them last year when working in dense smoke from a forest fire. It was very difficult breathing with them when raking leaves, cleaning firepits and bathrooms, even talking to guests. The USFS did NOT require them when the PPM were 1200 on a scale of 500 and we couldn’t see 10 feet in front of us (See Purple Air). Our box was also purchased BEFORE Covid so that was not printed anywhere on the box. Also, keep in mind, no one in the United States was ever wearing masks for disease, pollution maybe, but disease, no.
The front of the box: Respirator for Sanding and Fiberglass
This is the Warning: “This respirator helps protect against certain particles. Misuse may result in sickness or death.” Note: It only protects against ‘certain’ particles. It is made with globally sourced materials.
Third side explains the features: Noseclip reduces potential for eyewear fogging and keeps face cooler. I did not experience this when wearing this face mask. Also, when researching even N-95 face masks, it is vital that it is fitted correctly. This is taught in medical schools (along with how to wear gloves) and not known and understood by the general public. I doubt I wore my correctly, but I know how dirty it was when I was done using it so it kept most of the smoke particles out.
Last side: This respirator does not supply oxygen. This is for those who think the ‘respirator’ gives them oxygen. I felt I had a difficult time breathing IN oxygen and I also knew that I was not getting rid of CO2 efficiently which is why I had to lift it while doing strenuous work. I would get lightheaded and even at times nauseous. Also note the Do Not Use For.
I did a little bit of research on N95 masks and it seems that the information from before COVID to after COVID has changed. One article I read supported the idea of wearing N95 masks or even the less effective and more attainable surgical masks, but the article was written by someone from Beijing and I’m not trusting much that comes out of China.
