Most people have heard of the holiday called Hanukkah or Chanukkah. Some believe that it is the Jewish alternative to Christmas. However, these two celebrations have nothing in common.
Rosh Chodesh – New Month
New Moon celebrations are mentioned throughout the Scriptures. In Hebrew, the New Moon is called Rosh Chodesh. According to Vine’s Dictionary of Biblical Terms, the Hebrew word rosh means ‘head’ and chadash means to ‘renew’ in the sense of ‘refresh.’ The noun form of chodesh means ‘moon’ making Rosh Chodesh literally mean the ‘renewing of the moon’ at the beginning of each month. Using the calendar God gave to the Israelites, there are 12 months of 28 days in a year. Each month is determined by the lunar cycle and begins with the new moon; 14 days after the new moon, there is a full moon.

Name Above All Names
The English name ‘Jesus’ comes from a Latin transliteration of a Greek rendering of the Savior’s name; however, ‘Jesus’ was not Greek, Latin or English, he was an Israelite. The angel refers to Joseph as a ‘son of David’, thus Jesus’ human lineage as found in Matthew and Luke was from the Tribe of Judah making him Jewish. When Joseph took his infant son to be circumcised and named, he did not name him ‘Jesus.’ When his parents wanted him for dinner, they did not call him ‘Jesus.’ His brothers and sisters did not call him ‘Jesus.’ His friends and relatives in the Galilee did not call him ‘Jesus.’ His disciples and the Jewish leaders of the day did not call him ‘Jesus.’ They called him Yeshua.
