The Second Day – Water

“God said, “Let there be a dome in the middle of the water; let it divide the water from the water.”  God made the dome and divided the water under the dome from the water above the dome; that is how it was, and God called the dome Sky. So there was evening, and there was morning, a second day” (Genesis 1:6-8).

The second day of creation God created the ‘earth’ in the middle of water. This day includes hydrology, the study of water. It also includes the study of the atmosphere and meteorology.

  1. What is a dome?
  2. What is firmament? (King James Version)
  3. What is a vault? (New International Version)

Science Study

  1. How much of the earth is water? How much of your body is water?
  2. Put some water in a glass. Look at it. Describe its characteristics.
  3. There are three states of water: solid, liquid and gas. Take some water and put it into a pan. What is the state of the water? Heat the water on the stove until it boils? What is this state of water? Take some other water and put it in the freezer. In a few hours, look at this water. What is its state?
  4. Learn about the cycle of water from lakes, to clouds to rain.
  5. Learn about glaciers.
  6. Water is a solvent. Fill several glasses with water. Put salt into one glass and mix. What happens to the salt? Put some food coloring into another glass. What happens to the water? Why do you think soap is put into a washing machine or dishwasher?
  7. Read about the Great Salt Lake. What is unique about this body of water? Why is it important to have fresh water?
  8. What is the difference between a pond, lake, river, sea and ocean?
  9. Density: Fill a bowl with water. Put different objects into the water. Which ones float? Which ones sink?
  10. Chemistry: Using a periodic table, what is hydrogen? What is oxygen? How do these two chemicals create water?

Bible Study

  1. The Hebrew word for ‘heavens’ is hashamayim which means ‘water.’ How does that give insight into how God ‘divided’ the waters?
  2. What is living water?
  3. Read Exodus 17:1-7. How did the Israelites receive water in the wilderness?
  4. Read 1 Corinthians 10:4. Discuss the ‘rock.’
  5. Read Jeremiah 2:13. Where does God say living water comes from?
  6. Read John 4:5-24. Discuss the difference between the well and living water.
  7. Learn about the Dead Sea in Israel. What makes this body of water unique to all the world?
  8. For a more in-depth study of the second day of creation, with Hebrew words and idioms,
