The Real Epidemic

The real epidemic in this country, and even the world, is not the coronavirus. It is the ‘god of self.’ We have poured our identity and family into a culture that is self-absorbed, self-focused, and seemingly self-reliant.

We lost our true and healthy identity when we rejected the Creator, Healer and Provider who made us in His image and exchanged it for personality traits based on psychological and mental illness. I am an introvert. I am an extrovert. I’m depressed. I’m co-dependent. I am bi-sexuual. I’m a feminist. I am transgender. I have multiple personalities. I am agnostic. I am atheist. I don’t need God. I am who I am and I will love what I want to love: me! Get it?

We lost the concept of family from about World War II when mothers were taken from the home ‘to work.’ Children were placed into public institutions initially for education, but ultimately for day care and social programming. Working mothers left their natural place of responsibility and climbed the corporate ladder fighting to receive equal pay for equal work for which they really didn’t have equality. School teachers who started teaching because they loved children suddenly became the ones to parent and discipline countless children without any real authority.

Children who were raised in daycares and institutions grew up having no clue what motherhood looks like. These children who are now women having babies have no clue how to mother children. Without a strong mother, children do not learn the value of life. There is instinct, yes, but even animals give their children dignity. They feed them. They clean them. They brush their fur. They don’t go off to hang out with their friends, or even worse take their young to where there is inherent danger with alcohol and drugs. Animals don’t leave their young with others. They are not peer dependent adults who make excuses for why their young are not dressed, not potty trained, not eating healthy or able to nap. Because mothers are failing drastically at their intended calling (especially when they choose to have children), they call out anyone older with wisdom who makes a suggestion or points out the failure as being judgmental rather than helpful at making them a better ‘mommy.’

Because of the loss of true womanhood, few women protect their bodies and give themselves to many different men. Single parent women abound and it’s not the responsibility of anyone else to provide for them, except the fathers.

Then, of course fatherhood became vilified. Television dumbed-down the whole concept of being a father to some imbecile who can’t put his shoes on the right feet or stutters or makes dumb decisions for the family. Mocking the father image further disintegrated the family and the value of a man taking responsibility for the children he fathered. Some feminized themselves by choosing to stay home because their wives just couldn’t make that kind of sacrifice or made better money?! Strong fathers give children protection, create a work ethic, and teach them what is important in life. That loss is evident in the world today when employers say they can’t find anyone who knows how to work. That’s a fatherhood, manhood loss.

Traditional gender roles of being a daddy and mommy to sons and daughters became obsolete because the world was evolving into something else – an ever-more broken world. Though for ‘billions’ of years, traditional roles of fatherhood and motherhood kept societies alive and healthy, it became time in this age to sicken it and kill it.

Children got lost in the shuffle when fathers and mothers fought for the same financial gigs, fought against traditional home roles, and fought against personal sacrifice for ‘me’ only. Divorce rates rose. Children were separated from those who they were created to love and trust the most – parents who would give them security and teach them about life. They lost their true role models and then had to suffer blending of families with numerous half- and step-brothers and sisters. The institution of school became their ‘home’ life and their friends became their ‘parents.’ True socialization of generations growing and learning from each other became peer dependent and the ties between parents and children have severed perhaps to the point of no return.

The loss of God, the loss of identity in being a child of God and the destruction of the family has caused deep cultural schisms. Rather than being dependent on God and each other as family in not only daily life, but in a crisis situation, individuals are dependent upon institutions for food to whatever help they can receive from a government which steals from their very livelihood. Social media has replaced real conversations between people to making a point in 280 characters or less. Self-worth is won or lost in tweets, photos or comments, some that actually cause individuals to take their own lives. Fathers and mothers groan when they have to spend time, like summer vacation, with their children and count the days until they are free again. Children, though love missing school, still want to be with their friends rather than family. Add to this the murdering of children in their mother’s wombs to homosexual couples raising children so that some daughters don’t have mommies and some sons don’t have daddies. To acknowledge all of this cultural, family, and identity dysfunction probably has some ‘phobia’ attached to it. I don’t care.

I’m a no one in this world, but I know my Creator and I know who I am. I don’t define my self-worth by social media word counts nor do I have some armchair diagnosis of mental illness that I embrace so others feel sorry for me. I know that God’s Word holds Truth because I have watched how living contrary to His Truth plays out in the world with individual, family and cultural demise.

We are in the season of ‘plagues’ before Passover on April 8. I find the timing of this virus interesting. God sent plagues to Egypt to judge the gods that culture worshipped. Whether this virus is natural and of God or was created by some human to practice controlling mankind, God is using it to judge the ‘god of self’ in these days. Pharaoh had to make choices for his people and he constantly refused to humble himself until he, along with everyone in Egypt, experienced the death of their firstborn, unless they were ‘passed over.’ This viral ‘plague’ is only a health threat because it reveals the sick, selfish hearts of corporate humanity. The only cure for a sick heart is repentance and receiving a new heart through faith in Yeshua, the Messiah of Israel.

Today has been declared a national day of prayer, but one day of prayer won’t solve anything. Prayer has to be daily and it has to turn hardened hearts back to God for “if a person will not listen to, obey the Torah, the commands of God, even his prayer is an abomination” (Proverbs 28:9).

And now we’re back to the beginning. Will we be like Pharaoh and reject the Creator, Provider and Healer who can cure everything or will we humble ourselves and reject the ‘god of self?’ How you read the following Scripture will reveal your heart toward God because this virus is only the beginning of more ‘plagues’ to come.

“What is revealed is God’s anger from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people who in their wickedness keep suppressing the truth;  because what is known about God is plain to them, since God has made it plain to them.  For ever since the creation of the universe his invisible qualities — both his eternal power and his divine nature — have been clearly seen, because they can be understood from what he has made. Therefore, they have no excuse;  because, although they know who God is, they do not glorify him as God or thank him. On the contrary, they have become futile in their thinking; and their undiscerning hearts have become darkened.  Claiming to be wise, they have become fools!  In fact, they have exchanged the glory of the immortal God for mere images, like a mortal human being, or like birds, animals or reptiles!

This is why God has given them up to the vileness of their hearts’ lusts, to the shameful misuse of each other’s bodies.  They have exchanged the truth of God for falsehood, by worshipping and serving created things, rather than the Creator — praised be he for ever. Amen. This is why God has given them up to degrading passions; so that their women exchange natural sexual relations for unnatural;  and likewise the men, giving up natural relations with the opposite sex, burn with passion for one another, men committing shameful acts with other men and receiving in their own persons the penalty appropriate to their perversion.  In other words, since they have not considered God worth knowing, God has given them up to worthless ways of thinking; so that they do improper things.

They are filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and vice; stuffed with jealousy, murder, quarreling, dishonesty and ill-will; they are gossips, slanderers, haters of God; they are insolent, arrogant and boastful; they plan evil schemes; they disobey their parents; they are brainless, faithless, heartless and ruthless. They know well enough God’s righteous decree that people who do such things deserve to die; yet not only do they keep doing them, but they applaud others who do the same” (Romans 1:18-32).
