November 7, 2012 – Did Yeshua Bow for the US?

Matthew 4:1-11

“Then the Spirit led Yeshua up into the wilderness to be tempted by the Adversary. After Yeshua had fasted forty days and nights, he was hungry.

The Tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, order these stones to become bread.” But he answered, “The Tanakh says, ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of Adonai’”.

Then the Adversary took him to the holy city of Jerusalem and set him on the highest point of the Temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “Jump! For the Tanakh says, ‘He will order his angels to be responsible for you. . . . They will support you with their hands, so that you will not hurt your feet on the stones.’

Yeshua replied to him, “But it also says, ‘Do not put Adonai your God to the test.’”

Once more, the Adversary took him up to the summit of a very high mountain, showed him all the kingdoms of the world in all their glory, and said to him, “All this I will give you if you will bow down and worship me.”

“Away with you, Satan!” Yeshua told him, “For the Tanakh says, ‘Worship Adonai your God, and serve only him.’”  Then the Adversary let him alone, and angels came and took care of him.

Many days I think about  Matthew 4   This is the account of the Adversary tempting Yeshua to sin (break God’s commandments) and serve him.    The Adversary tempted Yeshua regarding food (provision) – making stones become bread; testing his protection (health care) – angels ministering to him so he won’t fall; and finally rulership (government) – controlling the kingdoms of the world..

It is the kingdoms of the world that I really like to think about.   The enemy showed Yeshua ALL the kingdoms of the world in ALL their glory.  He told Yeshua that if he would bow down and worship ‘him’ – the adversary –  he would receive ALL of these kingdoms.  Yeshua did not fall for this temptation – even for the ‘United States of America’.

Yeshua said, “My kingdom is not of this world. …my kingdom is from another place” (John 18:36).

As Yeshua’s followers, we should not fall for the same temptation believing that we can somehow ‘vote’ in a better kingdom through a new or different king.   No matter what happens with the election – who wins, who loses, who cheats, who lies, who steals, who votes even though they are dead or not even a citizen of the United States – there is a Kingdom that is not of this world that still remains.   We, as believers,  are citizens of  this Kingdom that will not pass away as did and will all the glorious kingdoms that Yeshua was shown during his temptation.   It is the real Kingdom of ‘promise, change and hope’.

“But we are citizens of heaven, and it is from there that we expect a Deliverer, the Lord Yeshua the Messiah” (Philippians 3:20).

The President of the United States is the commander in chief of the United States military.  He tells the military where to go and what to do.  They obey his commands to destroy enemies foreign and domestic and they avoid as much as possible civilian casualties.  Yeshua is also called a Commander in Chief, the Commander of the Lord’s Army  (Josh. 5:13-15).   All of his enemies, no matter where in the world,   will soon become His footstool (Ps. 110:1, Mat. 22:4).  It is our responsibility to follow our Commander and obey His commands in order to have victory.

We are the Lord’s army.  Remember the childhood song, “The Lord’s Army?”

“I may never march in the infantry,

ride in the calvary, shoot the artillery.

I may never fly over the enemy,

but I’m in the Lord’s army”.

“No soldier on duty gets involved in civilian affairs since he has to please his commanding officer” (2 Timothy 2:4).

As soldiers in the Lord’s army, we have an expressed command to stay out of civilian affairs (avoid civilian casualties?).    Civil means ‘relating to the state or its citizenry.’  Another possible meaning of ‘civilian affairs’ comes from ‘civil wars’ where the distinction between a soldier and a non-soldier gets blurred.  By staying out of ‘civilian affairs’, we will not fall victim to wars, battles, and ‘civil’  issues in which we do not belong causing ‘civilian casualties’ because of fighting the ‘wrong battles’ or fighting battles wrongly.  Always, the battle is the Lord’s and we are just his soldiers.   Perhaps as members in his army we are, like Israel,  just to ‘take a position, stand still, and watch how Yahweh delivers us!’  (2 Chron. 20:15-20).

“Next I saw heaven opened, and there before me was a white horse. Sitting on it was the one called Faithful and True, and it is in righteousness that he passes judgment and goes to battle.  His eyes were like a fiery flame, and on his head were many royal crowns. And he had a name written which no one knew but himself.  He was wearing a robe that had been soaked in blood, and the name by which he is called is, “THE WORD OF GOD.”  The armies of heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses.  And out of his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down nations — “He will rule them with a staff of iron.” It is he who treads the winepress from which flows the wine of the furious rage of Adonai, God of heaven’s armies.  And on his robe and on his thigh he has a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS” (Revelation 19:11-16).

When Yeshua returns, he won’t be represented by a donkey or an elephant.  He won’t be worried about economics, foreign policy, abortion, nuclear weapons, health care, gay marriage or unemployment.  He will not concern Himself with ‘conspiracy theories’,  ‘life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness’ or the American dream.   He will not be worrying about a coming  ‘new world order’; He will establish the true new world order – a Millennial Kingdom.    He will come out of the heavens, riding a white horse, bearing a sharp sword and a powerful ‘tongue.’   He will be recognized by his fiery eyes, his multiple crowns, and His authentic name.  He will rule and reign with righteousness and justice – and with an iron scepter – from Jerusalem.

As elections come and go,  spiritual darkness will continue to cover this earth and the men who rule the earth until the ‘day of the Lord’ and Yeshua returns  with his armies.  Yet we should have the peace that passes all understanding because we  have the knowledge that whoever Yahweh puts in authority are those He wants there to do His divine purpose and will for all men everywhere.

“Everyone is to obey the governing authorities. For there is no authority that is not from God, and the existing authorities have been placed where they are by God.  Therefore, whoever resists the authorities is resisting what God has instituted; and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves” (Romans 13:1-2).

Viewed from the eyes of the Creator, choosing rulers is a minor affair and the times and days will continue to grow difficult for everyone in the world – economically, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.    As soldiers from a different Kingdom,  we are also ambassadors for our King and His Kingdom.  His Kingdom is not about what we will wear or what we will eat, but  righteousness, peace, and joy ( Rom. 14:15).   As ambassadors for the Kingdom to come,  we must act as such and present a Kingdom of reconciliation between God and mankind.

“Therefore we are ambassadors of the Messiah; in effect, God is making his appeal through us. What we do is appeal on behalf of the Messiah, “Be reconciled to God!” (2 Corinthians 5:20).
