Are you being deceived?

“There is a way that seems right to a man, but at its end are the ways of death” (Proverbs 14:12).

Today I’m praying for two men who are very deceived and spread a lawless, unrighteous message of ‘faith’.  They challenge anyone and everyone they meet  who believes faith includes works of righteousness and a life of sanctification through obeying the commandments.  They love to argue against God’s laws/Torah, a message of lawlessness,  and try to stumble those on the narrow way into a path of destruction.

“But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law (Torah), because these are unprofitable and useless” (Titus 3:9).

The Scriptures say that deception is a sign of the end times.  Not only will there be those who deceive others, there will be those who are themselves deceived.

And indeed, all who want to live a godly life united with the Messiah Yeshua will be persecuted, while evil people and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving others and being deceived themselves” (2 Timothy 3:12-13).

Yeshua warns that deception will happen to many people and His people are to ‘Watch out!”   The appearance of  many false prophets will ‘turn people away from the faith’.  This faith is a Biblical faith that includes righteous living, not a faith of doctrines of men.  For the doctrines of men will bring forth false Messiahs, deception, betrayal and hatred!

“Yeshua answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah’ and will deceive many… At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other,  and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. (Matthew 24:4,11).

I found this quote by Edwin Louis Cole very interesting.

“Knowledge of God’s Word is a bulwark against deception, temptation, accusation, even persecution.”

His words seem to sum up how ‘not’ to be deceived – knowledge of God’s Word.   Many who call themselves Christians today no longer grow in the ‘knowledge and grace’ of their Savior (2 Peter 3:18), but only the ‘grace’.  They reject the Torah of God as legalism, curse, and falling away from ‘grace.’.  The unfortunate end to this type of or lack of spiritual growth through the sanctifying Word of Truth (John 17:17)  is rejection by God.

“You reject all who stray from your decrees,  for their deceitfulness is in vain.” (Psalm 119:118).

Deception will fall upon all those who separate themselves from the full counsel of God’s Word, the Torah, the Prophets, the Writings, the Apostolic Scriptures. This is what happened to Eve in the Garden.  She separated herself from the counsel of God’s Word.  It was this deception that led Adam to sin and break God’s commandment.

The very meaning of deception includes ‘distortions or omissions’ that serve to twist the Truth.  The serpent was crafty (subtle) when deceiving Eve.  He twisted the Word of God and omitted the parts he didn’t think were necessary for Eve to think about.  He even caused her to question the very command given to Adam by God.  When these two men argue their viewpoint which comes from serious doctrinal error and poor hermeneutics, they omit any part of Scripture that suggests that the saints not only have faith in Yeshua’s atoning work on the cross, but also obey the commandments of God (Revelation 14:12).

Deception violates the rules of relationship.  Many marriages/friendships fall apart because of deceptive practices between one or both parties.  They ‘break the rules‘ because people expect honesty and faithfulness in a relationship.    The same holds true in the relationship between the Father and His children.  When one of His children violate His rules –  i.e. faithfulness (obedience) to His commands, decrees, statutes – that child deceives himself if he thinks his behavior is acceptable.   As the created beings, we cannot be in a relationship with our Creator and remain resistant to His will for our lives.   Adam and Eve learned by ‘breaking the rule’.  They paid the price of separation through sin and death.  Their only salvation was through Yeshua and consequent obedience to God’s Words.

I believe these two men are sincerely convinced that they know a man named Jesus Christ.   I also believe  these two men sincerely desire to be in relationship and fellowship with the Savior of the world.   However, through their own lack of knowledge of the Word of God, they have allowed a ‘crafty serpent’ to deceive them into a life of sin, destruction, and rejection.

“But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Messiah.  For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Messiah we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough” (2 Corinthians 11:3-4).

I am also praying for a third man who is involved in trying to show one of these men the Truth through all the God-breathed Scripture (2 Timothy 3:16).     I pray for wisdom for this young man who has become the next saint being called by the LORD to challenge these deceptions.  May the Ruach come into this man’s heart, turn it from stone to flesh so he may truly know the Messiah Yeshua and the complete salvation he has brought to those who call on his name and know his Word.

“Prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ “(Ephesians 4:12).
