February 3, 2011 – Watching Egypt

“Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance YHVH will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again” (Exodus 14:13).

How true this was for Israel at the Exodus.   The Egyptians they saw were never seen again.  I’m sure they were shocked when they watched what transpired.  However, while those Egyptians are gone, Egypt still exists and so do modern-day Egyptians.

For some reason today I’m thinking a lot about Egypt.  It is probably because they are in the news so powerfully with the threat of revolution.  The battles within that country and how they are resolved will affect the entire world.  However, no matter what happens with Egypt, we are called to pray for the peace of Jerusalem – and Israel (Psalm 122).  The battles that rage in Egypt will in some way or another have a profound impact on Israel and Israelis.  We need to be praying for the Israeli soldiers who like their ancestors have to defend their country from the surrounding nations who seek to destroy them.

The verse above, however  is a reminder of what YHVH does to those who are Israel’s enemies and, until recently, Egypt was her friend of sorts.  Throughout the Prophets, there are Scriptures that speak of Egypt coming to know YHVH.  They are promised redemption.  Could the events of today be the beginning of their redemption?  Will they miraculously be delivered from what they are doing to turn all nations in the Middle East against Israel?

No matter what happens, YHVH deals with the enemies of His people Israel  in powerful ways – Egypt is no exception.  We just need  to stand firm without fear  and watch the redemption of Israel just as the Israelites did standing on the shores of the Red Sea.
